John D. Gwyn is an Associate Attorney who joined the firm in 2017. Mr. Gwyn received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications from the University of Michigan in 1986 and earned a Juris Doctorate Degree from the former Detroit College of Law, now known as the Michigan State University College of Law, in 1990. After attending Kings College in London, England, he became a graduate of the Institute for International Legal Studies.

Mr. Gwyn gained experience in community association law through his representation of condominium and homeowners associations and individual owners in matters involving real estate, contract, and construction issues. He has handled many types of community association-related litigation, including assessment collection, lien foreclosures, bylaw violations, civil rights defense, and creditor bankruptcy matters.

Over the past several years, Mr. Gwyn had focused his practice on bankruptcy and creditors’ rights representation, with a particular emphasis on real estate issues. As an attorney who has represented local and national financial institutions for over two decades, his extensive litigation and transactional background provides him with the experience necessary to handle even the most complex legal issues that community associations may encounter. He has obtained successful outcomes for clients in state and federal courts throughout Michigan. Mr. Gwyn’s prior participation in the oversight of the legal aspects of Special Asset Projects, including loan workouts, restructuring and collateral recovery, is also of significant value to his present practice.

Mr. Gwyn’s affiliations include the State Bar of Michigan (SBM), with membership in the Consumer and Bankruptcy Sections; the Detroit chapter of the Consumer Bankruptcy Association (CBA); the Community Associations Institute (CAI); the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI); and the United Condominium Owners of Michigan (UCOM). As a former Young Lawyers Section Chairman of the Macomb County Bar Association, Mr. Gwyn received the Association’s Special Service Award. He also served as a member of the Pro Bono Division of the Macomb County Legal Aid Bureau and has contributed to various legal publications throughout his career.

Mr. Gwyn has many interests outside his legal practice. He is an enthusiastic Detroit Tigers fan, and loves travel and music. He spends most of his free time on summer weekends boating on Lake St. Clair with his wife and their dog.
